The purpose of task NA-D 3.6 of the SYNTHESYS project is to facilitate the geographical analysis of the networked specimen information.

With networked specimen information we mean specimens that are connected to the GBIF or BioCASe networks. Actually there is 76.734.633 specimen or observation records connected trough 141 data providers [GBIF stats].
The kind of geographical analysis we are considering is distribution modeling, richness analysis, etc. that make use of georeference specimen information available trough GBIF like networks.

The project started officially the 1st of September at the MNCN in Madrid and will last for 10 months more or less. After this period there are possibilities to continue working on the same direction with another European project called EDIT.

Project phases:

The project is divided in three phases:

3.6.1) Review of existing implementations of GIS standards and software. Study
possibilities of visualization and implementation of a GIS query system.
Visit expert groups (e.g. LatLon in Bonn).Identify European high quality
maps of different kinds (e.g. physical, administrational, etc.)

Duration: 2.5 months
Deliverable: Report of existing GIS standards and software

Finished! Download the report

3.6.2) Implementation of visualization server for spatial unit data and communicate interface specification to relevant tasks in NA D (e.g. Paris UI, itineraries Tervuren)

Duration: 3.5 months
Deliverable: Visualization server for spatial unit data implemented

3.6.3) Set up web feature service and query system (depending on outcome of review)

Duration: 2 months
Deliverable: Web feature service and query system available
